Rio McGillvary's Portfolio: The Five Qualities

The five qualities of DRSS are attributes we try to demonstrate and use to learn and grow as better individuals at this school.

Collaboration

A cardboard Ferris wheel model. The carts have pictures of flowers
glued on. The base is green with drawn on plants and labeled 'community garden'. There also is a cardboard restaurant on the base of the model.
Collaboration is working together with others to achieve a shared goal. This year, in Precalculus, we had to make a model of a Ferris wheel. We had to work together to achieve this. I made the flyer for advertising, Izzy was the project manager, Kaya was the architect, and Sarah Bragg was the mathematical engineer. We had to work together to design it. I also had to ask for the speed, the graphs, tables, and more to complete my flyer and make it accurate. We also had to come up with things like theme, colors, and special features together.

Persistence

A periodic table-like structure with various grocery products on it.
Persistence is shown when you try over and over again to reach a goal even if you fail multiple times and keep goind on, unhindered by challenges. In the image above it shows a periodic table we had to make out of grocery store products. It took a lot of work to find pictures that looked good with the text and to figure out how to arrange them in something that could be shown as a trend or scale. I also had to find more items to fill some of the spaces on the table which was difficult because Groceryland appears to not be very organized. But, in the end, we did it and got an A!

Inquiry

Rio doing tai-chi with other kids.
Inquiry is the ability to stop and ask a question when you need to know something instead of pressing forward aimlessly. I do ask a lot of questions to make sure I know what I'm doing. I had to ask the Taiji teacher lots of questions to better understand how to do it. I even realized one of the main issues was the shoes I was wearing when I practiced! I better learned how to balance and demonstrate the moves. I demonstrated the effect of inquiry at Exhibition night when I did Taiji well and effectively. of inquiry.

Communication

Rio taking the picture along with a girl with black hair in a red hoodie with glasses, and another girl with cyan hair, wearing plaid, are sitting in front of computers with Rio. Rio is holding the phone that took the photo of the group. This was during the Silver rank CyberPatriots semi-finals in 2023.
Communication is talking to someone else to help achieve the goal of collaboration with that person. The picture above is of Sarah Orlando (the girl in the red hoodie) Cora Dunekacke (the girl in the plaid) and I (in the tan sweatshirt) as a team working together to try and beat the silver semifinals. We all helped each other on the different operating systems and communicated when we couldn't figure our waht to do next. We were the only team at our school that made it to the finals in 2023. I think that perfectly demonstrates the strength of a team when you use effective communication to work together and coordinate as a team.

Creativity

KTurtle program having draw lots of green and blue spirals.
Creativity is making up ideas that are original and new and are generally (but don't have to be) shown artistically. Above is an image of the "Personal Project" we had to do first quarter of 10th grade in Programming. It had to be original to get full points. I always loved colors so I wanted it to be colorful and it had to have a random component. I also liked flowers. So I made lines in the shape of a flower be drawn randomly on the screen. The program was written in KTurtle, a software where a turtle draws on the screen, following different commands you input.
